Het werk van Bert heeft altijd een sterke grafische uitstraling gehad. Het sterke contrast spreekt hem aan. Bert heeft geen dieptezicht omdat hij maar met één oog kan zien. Dit is deels een verklaring voor zijn interesse in visuele illusies.

 

In het begin beperkten de composities zich tot verticale en horizontale lijnen en een zwart-wit uitwerking. In de loop van de tijd evolueerde het werk naar complexere structuren. Ook het kleurgebruik veranderde geleidelijk. Hoewel Bert begint met een lay-out in potlood, gaat hij heel intuïtief te werk. Hij houdt rekening met wat er tijdens het proces gebeurt. Naarmate het werk vordert, begint het zijn vorm te krijgen. Hij gebruikt linialen of zelfgemaakte sjablonen om zijn motieven te creëren. Vaak wordt er gebruik gemaakt van herhaling en spiegeling. Door bepaalde vormen te herhalen houdt het werk ons brein voor de gek. Zijn lijnen en vlakken flirten met de grens van optische illusie en spanning. Bert zelf noemt zijn werk eerder ‘optische desillusie’.

 

Bert werkt altijd op papier. Hij werkt graag op standaard papierformaten, waarbij hij gebruik maakt van fineliners en (kleur)markers. De structuren die hij tekent variëren van geometrische tot biomorfe vormen. Fouten of vergissingen worden verborgen met een klein stukje papier. Hij is daarin behoorlijk perfectionistisch. Het ontwerp moet altijd onberispelijk zijn.

The work of Bert has always had a strong graphic appearance. The strong contrast appeals to him. Bert doesn’t have a depth perception because he can only see with one of his eyes. This could be an explanation for his interest in visual illusions.

In the beginning the compositions were limited to vertical and horizontal lines and a black and white elaboration. Over time the work evolved into more complex structures. Also the use of colour changed gradually. Although Bert starts off with a layout in pencil, he works very intuitively. He is mindful for what happens during the process. While the work progresses, it starts to get its shape. He uses rulers or self-made templates to create his motifs. Repetition and mirroring are often used. By repeating certain forms, the work starts to play tricks with our brain. His lines and planes flirt with the border of optical illusion and tension. The artist himself refers to his work as “optical des-illusion”.

Bert always works on paper. He likes to work on standard paper sizes, using fine liners and (colour) markers. The structures he draws range from geometric to biomorphic forms. Errors or mistakes are hidden with a small piece of paper. He is quite a perfectionist in that matter. The design always has to be flawless.
